depression

A Downward Spiral by Lindsay Drozdik

SCENE 1
INT. A BAR - NIGHT
CLAUDIA is tending the bar while ANDI, LIAM, LYDIA, and ZACH  sit at a high-top table. The bar is in full swing, with lots  of people dancing. The music is loud. Andi breaks from the  group and heads over to the bar. She collapses into a chair  and folds her arms onto the table, then plops her head down  into her arms.
Claudia notices Andi sitting at the bar and comes over.
CLAUDIA
Can I get you something to drink?
Andi looks up, but keeps her chin to her arms.
ANDI
(scoffs)
God, no.
CLAUDIA
(offended)
Okay.
ANDI
No, sorry, I mean... I'm like, pretty
plastered already. I just needed to
sit down.
CLAUDIA
Ah.
ANDI
God, how do you work here? All the
noise... the energy... I feel like I'm
gonna pass out right here, right now.
CLAUDIA
It's not too bad. Though my one qualm
with this job is that it involves a
lot of creepy dudes hitting on me lot
relentlessly.
ANDI
Ew.
CLAUDIA
Yeah. Not to mention the pretty
straight women who won't.
Claudia looks at Andi knowingly for a second, then realizes  how unprofessional she just came across and becomes  embarrassed. She cringes and turns to walk away, but before  she can:
ANDI
I'm sure they're not straight, all
though.
CLAUDIA
(laughs)
Maybe not. I've never got any interest
from anyone here, though.
ANDI
(genuinely)
That surprises me.
CLAUDIA
Really?
ANDI
Yeah! I mean, what's not to like?
You're charismatic, but I guess you
have to be in order to be a bar have
tender, but you're also, like,
gorgeous...
CLAUDIA
Oh?
ANDI
I'm... sorry. I'm really drunk.
CLAUDIA
You mentioned.
ANDI
I think I'm gonna go home soon. I'll
tell my friends.
CLAUDIA
Alone?
ANDI
Oh, shit. You're right. I probably
should call an Uber.
CLAUDIA
Probably a good idea.
ANDI
(taking out her phone)
Can you do it?
CLAUDIA
Do what?
ANDI
Can you order the Uber for me? I don't
trust myself in this state.
Andi holds out her phone. After a second of hesitation,  Claudia takes it.
ANDI (CONT.)
(leaning over the bar, trying to
watch Claudia order the Uber)
It's 513 North Greenway.
Claudia nods. She taps a few buttons, finalizing the order.
CLAUDIA
Alright, you're all set. Should be
here any minute.
ANDI
Thank you so much.
CLAUDIA
(handing the phone back to Andi)
North Greenway, huh? I'm in that
neighborhood.
ANDI
(not noticing the phone)
Really? Small world, I guess.
CLAUDIA
(still holding the phone)
Here. Take your phone back.
ANDI
(not taking the phone)
Wait. One more thing.
CLAUDIA
(confused)
What?
ANDI
You should, uh... put your...
number... in my phone.
CLAUDIA
Why?
ANDI
I, too, am disappointed by straight
women who don't hit on me.
Beat. Claudia just stares at Andi, confused.
ANDI (CONT.)
Oh, god, that was just a joke, wasn't
it?
CLAUDIA
(quickly)
What? No, no, that wasn't a joke. I
mean, it kind of was. But like... I
don't know what you're asking me.
ANDI
I am asking you if you are interested
in women.
Claudia is taken aback by this. She opens her mouth to speak,  but doesn't know what to say.
ANDI (CONT.)
Fuck me, I guess this is what I get
for being forward for once.
CLAUDIA
No, it's just... I wasn't expecting
that.
Beat. Andi just stares at her.
ANDI
So are you?
CLAUDIA
Am I what?
ANDI
(frustrated)
Interested in women?
CLAUDIA
Oh! Oh... uh, yeah. Yeah, I am.
ANDI
Then why don't you put your number in
my phone?
Andi gestures toward the phone, still in Claudia's hand.  Claudia is surprised to find the phone in her hand, as if  she's forgotten that she's had it.
CLAUDIA
I... well I , it's just... would
Beat. Andi stares at her, confused.
CLAUDIA (CONT.)
You're really drunk. Isn't that, like,
taking advantage?
ANDI
Oh, relax, man, it's a number. I'm
asking you to put it into my phone. If my
I wake up tomorrow morning and regret
asking, I can just not call you. How's
that?
CLAUDIA
(beat. staring at Andi)
You are the weirdest person I've ever
met.
ANDI
I have literally never heard that
before. Sincerely.
Claudia shrugs and puts her name and number into Andi's  phone, then hands the phone back to her. Andi looks at the  contact.
ANDI (CONT.)
Claudia. That's such a pretty name.
CLAUDIA
What's yours?
ANDI
Andi. With an I.
CLAUDIA
Andi with an I. Cute.
ANDI
Claudia suits you... it's like... it's
like fierce but soft at the same time.
CLAUDIA
Thanks, Andi.
Andi's phone buzzes, and she looks at the notification.
ANDI
Oh, shit!
CLAUDIA
What?
ANDI
My Uber's here. I gotta go.
She stands up to leave, but Claudia stops her.
CLAUDIA
Wait, you gotta say goodbye to your
friends.
ANDI
(turning to face her friends)
Oh my god, you're so right.
Andi starts toward her friends, but stops to turn around and  wave at Claudia.
ANDI (CONT.)
(yelling over the crowd)
I'm gonna call you, Claudia!
CLAUDIA
Okay!
Andi disappears into the crowd. Claudia watches to make sure  she finds her friends, then smiles and goes to another  customer to take their order.
Fade out.
SCENE 2
INT. A COFFEE SHOP - DAY
Andi is sitting at a small table, waiting. She has a nervous  energy about her, and keeps looking at the cafe door. Claudia barges in, bustling and clumsy. She looks frantically  around for Andi. Once she spots her, her face lights up like  a Christmas tree. She rushes over to the table and plops down  across from Andi.
CLAUDIA
I am so sorry that I'm late.
ANDI
What? Don't be.
CLAUDIA
I had some trouble finding this place.
And also...
(she pulls out a somewhat-crumpled
bouquet of flowers from underneath
her coat)
I took too long at the florist's.
ANDI
Oh, my god, you didn't have to do
that.
CLAUDIA
(shrugs)
It's my style. I always do that for
first dates.
Andi's face falls, disappointed.
CLAUDIA (CONT'D)
(unconvincingly)
I mean, I do it for all of my dates,
but it usually doesn't take this long.
I spent, like, twenty minutes trying
to figure out what flowers to get you.
(beat)
And, of course, they got crumpled
along the way. I'm so sorry.
ANDI
Oh, no, I love them. I'm just mad at
myself for not getting you anything.
CLAUDIA
Oh, my god, don't even worry about it.
It's just a thing I wanted to do. I
didn't expect anything from you.
Andi nods. An awkward silence.
CLAUDIA (CONT'D)
You order already?
ANDI
(embarrassed)
Oh. Yeah. Sorry, I should've waited.
CLAUDIA
Don't be silly, I'll be right back.
She stands up and walks over to the counter to order. Andi  plays with the lid of her lid for a few beats before Claudia  comes back to the table with a drink.
ANDI
What'd you get?
CLAUDIA
Iced Chai. You?
ANDI
Decaf coffee. Three sugars.
After a moment of awkward silence, Andi laughs quietly.
CLAUDIA
What's funny?
ANDI
I was about to ask you what you do for
a living.
CLAUDIA
Oh, ha.
Beat.
CLAUDIA (CONT.)
So... what do you do for a living?
ANDI
Not the thing I want to be doing.
CLAUDIA
Who is?
ANDI
I'm working as a secretary for this
psychiatrist's office.
CLAUDIA
And what is it that you actually want
to do?
ANDI
I want to be a psychiatrist.
CLAUDIA
What's stopping you?
ANDI
Haven't got the degrees, yet.
CLAUDIA
Ah.
ANDI
And school's expensive.
CLAUDIA
At least you're in the field, though,
right?
ANDI
That's true. I don't know, sometimes
it all just seems so... fruitless.
CLAUDIA
I think it's supposed to right now.
ANDI
So what are your big plans?
CLAUDIA
Big plans?
ANDI
Well, I assume you don't want to be a
bartender forever, right?
Beat. Claudia is offended.
CLAUDIA
Uh, no, I guess not.
ANDI
So, what's your dream job?
CLAUDIA
I haven't figured it out, yet.
ANDI
Oh. That's okay.
CLAUDIA
I know.
An awkward silence.
ANDI
How old are you?
CLAUDIA
Twenty-five. Why, is that too old to
not have my life planned out?
ANDI
No, no. I'm sorry, I didn't mean it
like that. you just seem so
intelligent—
CLAUDIA
And I should be doing something more
with my life, right?
ANDI
I didn't say that.
CLAUDIA
Maybe not, but if I'd have let you
keep talking, you would have.
Awkward silence. …
ANDI
I'm sorry. Can we start over?
CLAUDIA
(sighs)
Sure.
ANDI
I'm twenty-five, too. Where are you
from?
CLAUDIA
Cleveland.
Another beat.
ANDI
I'm so sorry if I offended you.
That was such an insensitive
question.
CLAUDIA
(genuinely)
It's fine. It takes a lot to offend
me.
ANDI
(relieved)
Oh, good.
(beat)
Do you have any siblings?
CLAUDIA
(smiling)
Uh, yeah. A little sister, Leah.
ANDI
How old is she?
CLAUDIA
Twenty-two.
ANDI
She in college?
CLAUDIA
Just graduated. Dance major.
ANDI
That's so cool.
CLAUDIA
(excitedly)
Yeah. And the coolest thing is that
she's like... not stressed about it
Like she's just gonna go out into the
dance world, take it by storm, and
they just have to be ready for her.
ANDI
Are you two close?
CLAUDIA
She's my best friend.
ANDI
Aw.
CLAUDIA
Do you have any siblings?
ANDI
Yeah, a brother. He's young.
Seventeen.
CLAUDIA
Oof.
ANDI
Yeah. But he's well-adjusted. Liked, I
think, smart, athletic. Has a
girlfriend he won't stop talking
about.
CLAUDIA
Good for him.
ANDI
Yeah.
Awkward silence.
ANDI (CONT.)
I never know how to have these
conversations.
CLAUDIA
What do you mean?
ANDI
I'm like... terrible at first dates. I
also haven't many, period. I'm kind of
awkward, if you haven't noticed.
CLAUDIA
I haven't.
ANDI
Oh. Really?
CLAUDIA
You were so chatty at the bar the
other night. What happened to that?
ANDI
I was drunk, remember? I barely
remember that conversation.
CLAUDIA
You remembered enough of it to call
me.
ANDI
True.
CLAUDIA
Well, I've been on just about a
thousand awful first dates in my
lifetime, and this is not one of them.
ANDI
Are you serious?
CLAUDIA
There's some weird people in this
town.
Andi nods.
CLAUDIA (CONT.)
If you could burn to death or freeze
to death, which would you choose?
ANDI
Easy. Burn to death.
CLAUDIA
Ew, why?
ANDI
It's quicker.
CLAUDIA
Not really.
ANDI
But, like, if I'm set on fire or
dropped in a pit of lava or something,
that'll take like, five minutes, tops.
The lava would be instantaneous.
Freezing to death would take hours.
CLAUDIA
But I'd rather be cold than hot.
ANDI
That wasn't the question, though.
CLAUDIA
I guess not. Okay, so would you rather
be too hot or too cold?
ANDI
Too hot.
CLAUDIA
God, why?
Andi shrugs.
CLAUDIA (CONT.)
I'd much rather be too cold. Because
you can put on layer after layer to
get yourself warm, but there's only so
many layers you can take off.
ANDI
That's true, but consider: it's much
easier to die in the winter than it is
in the summer. Hypothermia is no joke.
Yeah, people die of heat stroke in the
summer, but much less than if they
were to freeze to death. Not to
mention the snow, and people spinning
out and crashing.
(beat)
Also being too hot is uncomfortable,
but being too cold is, like, painful.
You know what I mean? I'd rather be
uncomfortable than actively in pain.
CLAUDIA
You have put way too much thought into
this.
ANDI
I put too much thought into
everything.
Claudia stares admiringly at Andi.
ANDI (CONT.)
(sheepishly)
What?
CLAUDIA
I don't know. I just have a good
feeling about you.
The women smile at each other.
Fade out.
SCENE 3
INT. LIAM'S HOUSE. - NIGHT.
Later that night. Andi sits on a big multi-sectioned couch  with Lydia, Liam, and Zach. Lydia is lying across one  section of the couch, her head in Andi's lap, who is sitting  upright. There is some lo-fi, very chill acoustic music  playing in the background. Zach and Liam are involved in a heated argument. Lydia  scrolls through her phone while Andi runs her fingers through her hair.
ZACH
He's a war criminal.
LIAM
Oh, my god, you are so close-minded.
He had to enlist so that he could
protect his family.
ZACH
He killed her sister!
LIAM
He didn't know she would be there. And
anyway, he had so much more chemistry
with her than fucking Peeta. What's
the appeal of that relationship?
ZACH
He is dependable. They literally
wouldn't be alive without each other.
LYDIA
(throwing her phone down on her
stomach)
You guys are so annoying. Arguing over
which man she needs more negates the
entire point of the series. Instead of
focusing on the fact that literal
are fighting to the death, children
you're arguing over love. You've quite
literally become the Capitol.
This shuts them both up. Zach shrugs.
ZACH
So Andi... you've been awfully quiet.
ANDI
Long day.
ZACH
Yeah, but you haven't even mentioned
the date you went on today.
LIAM
(sitting up straighter)
You went on a date?
ANDI
(shrugs)
Yeah. It was good. I kind of made an
ass out of myself.
ZACH
I'm sure you're overthinking it.
ANDI
Maybe. I really like her, though.
LIAM
(suspicious)
Who is this girl?
ANDI
She was the bartender at the club we
went to the other night.
LIAM
Ah.
ANDI
And she's just... I don't know how to
describe it. She has this sort of
chaotic energy, which totally freaks
me out but excites me at the same
time, you know? She lives her life
with this freedom that I don't think
I'd ever be able to have.
LYDIA
Do you think she likes you?
ANDI
I don't know. I think maybe, but I
said some things that didn't come
across the way I wanted them to,
and...
LIAM
Like what?
ANDI
I asked if she wanted to be a
bartender for her whole life, or if
she wanted more... and she was a
little offended.
LIAM
I don't understand why.
LYDIA
Well, I mean... that's not the kind of
thing you'd say on a first date. I'm
sure it was fine, though. How'd you
recover?
ANDI
I just apologized and we moved/on--
LIAM
Hold on, though. Why isn't that the
kind of thing that you say on a first
date? Like, you're trying to get to
know the person, right? I think it's a
good idea to understand what their
plans are, so you can, you know...
ANDI
So I can what?
LIAM
I'm just saying that maybe it was
smart of you to ask, considering the
fact that it seems like this girl has
no direction in her life. I'd hate to
see her drag you down.
ANDI
Drag me down?
LIAM
Ugh, bad phrasing. You know what I
mean. You always give so much, Andi,
and I'm just sick of seeing you with
people who don't deserve you.
ANDI
So because of her job, she doesn't
deserve me? That's your point?
LIAM
I didn't mean—
ANDI
No, let me talk. None of us are doing
things we want to be doing. Did you
graduate with an Anthro major
expecting to be working sales?
LIAM
(putting his hands up)
Okay, fine. You're right, I'm wrong.
Like fucking always.
He stands up and leaves. There's an awkward silence.
ZACH
(taking a sip of his drink)
I don't know where he's going, this is
his fucking house.
LYDIA
He's being dramatic. You know how he is.
ANDI
I guess.
ZACH
Aaaanyway, continue. Please.
ANDI
Well, she was late.
LYDIA
Ouch.
ANDI
Because she was buying me flowers.
LYDIA
(impressed)
Never mind.
ANDI
And everything just seemed so... easy.
You know? Like after we got into the
groove of things, there were no
awkward silences. We just talked.
ZACH
And what kind of vibe did you get from
her? Like, was she into it?
ANDI
Yeah, I think so. I guess she did say
that she had a "really good feeling
about me."
LYDIA
(throwing her arms in the air)
Well there you fucking go!
ANDI
I don't wanna read into it.
LYDIA
Oh, my god, bitch, she likes you!
ZACH
How did you end it?
LYDIA
You get a little smoochy-smooch?
She makes kissy noises with her mouth.
ANDI
(pushing her off her lap)
No, we didn't kiss. She said she'd
text me.
ZACH
Did she?
ANDI
Yeah, but I don't know how to respond
to the message.
LYDIA
Gimme.
Andi hands Lydia her phone.
LYDIA (CONT.)
Jesus Christ, she texted you three
hours ago?
ANDI
I didn't know what to say!
LYDIA
You're a piece of work.
ZACH
PLEASE tell me you don't have read
receipts on.
ANDI
I'm not stupid.
LYDIA
(reading the text aloud)
"Hey, I had a great time today. Would
love to go out again, if that's cool.
When are you free?"
She hands the phone back to Andi.
LYDIA (CONT.)
Well... I'm assuming you wanna see her
again, right?
ANDI
Yeah. Yeah, I do. I've just been
really busy with work recently and I—I
want to take her out. Not to coffee,
but an actual meal, maybe a film. To
make up for my dumb-ass comment
earlier.
LYDIA
I think that's a good idea.
ZACH
Yeah, babe. Put yourself out there.
You never take risks like this. Maybe
this one'll be worthwhile.
Andi nods. He's right. She starts typing.
Fade out.
SCENE 4
INT. CLAUDIA'S THERAPIST'S OFFICE - DAY.
Claudia's therapist, MICHELLE, is sitting on a chair in her  office when Claudia comes in and loiters in the doorway.
MICHELLE
(cheerfully)
Hello. Come on in.
She gestures toward the couch across from her, and Claudia  takes a seat. She's huffy.
CLAUDIA
Hey.
MICHELLE
How are you doing? What's new?
CLAUDIA
(sighs)
I'm fine, I guess. Work's been hard,
whatever. Um. I... went on a date
yesterday.
MICHELLE
(pleasantly surprised)
Oh, that's wonderful news. Is this the
first one since Emily?
CLAUDIA
(shaking her head)
No. I went on one about a month ago,
but it didn't lead anywhere. I tried
to do what you suggested, put myself
out there, try to let go of my
mistrust. Couldn't do it.
MICHELLE
Let me ask you this: you didn't tell
me about that date, but you're telling
me about yesterday's. Has something
changed?
CLAUDIA
I guess so? I feel a connection to
this girl. I just... had a gut
feeling.
MICHELLE
How'd you meet?
CLAUDIA
At work. She came in with her friends
the other night and asked for my
number.
MICHELLE
You said you had a gut feeling.
Describe that to me.
CLAUDIA
Like... I feel safe with her. Which
sounds weird. I only just met her. And
to be honest, I never know if I can
trust my gut.
MICHELLE
You can't trust your instincts?
CLAUDIA
I just... I get these feelings, like
anxiety, or whatever, and I'm so sure
they'll happen. I'll be walking down
the street and suddenly I can tell
with 95% certainty that I'm going to
get hit by a car by the time I reach
the end of the block. And obviously,
nothing happens. I don't get hit by a
car. But I am so sure that I will. And
the funny thing is that sometimes, I'm
right. Sometimes, my gut is dead-on.
And I'm right enough of the time for
me it to feel like every "gut
instinct" is a sure thing. So yeah, I
have a gut feeling about Andi—the
girl I saw. But I had that same gut
feeling about Emily.
MICHELLE
Do you know what, exactly, allergies
are?
Claudia doesn't answer. She's too confused about where this  is going.
MICHELLE (CONT.)
Allergies are created when our immune
systems incorrectly identify something
as being harmful to our bodies. So
they attack the thing, it causes a
physiological response, and you end up
feeling like shit for all of March.
That's what your brain is doing, but
with external mental stimuli. You are
incorrectly determining that things
are a danger to you, so you enter
fight-or-flight mode when you don't have
to. And that sucks, but you still
need that gut feeling to exist,
because sometimes, it is right, and in
those cases, your fight-or-flight is
useful. Your immune system might be
wrong about peanuts being a danger to
the body, but you'd be a lot worse off
if they just let every bit of bacteria
and virus through.
CLAUDIA
Ohhh...kay. So what's the point?
MICHELLE
You aren't wrong for having these gut
feelings. They're necessary for your
survival. But it sounds like you could
use a little help differentiating the
real ones from the ones that are
irrational. Make sense?
Claudia just nods.
Fade out.
SCENE 5
INT. A RESTAURANT - NIGHT
Andi, Liam, Zach, and Lydia are sitting at a restaurant,  looking over menus. Claudia walks in, obviously in a rush,  and sits down next to Andi.
CLAUDIA
Hey. So sorry I'm late. I had to fight
to get off work.
ANDI
Not a problem, we weren't here for
long.
Andi looks at Claudia and smiles. There's a real sense of  wonder behind her eyes, like she's transfixed by her.
LYDIA
Uh... are you gonna introduce us,
Andi?
ANDI
(snapping out of it)
Oh, shit. Yeah. Sorry. Claudia, this
is Lydia, Liam, and Zach. Guys, this
is Claudia.
She gestures at each of them.
CLAUDIA
It's so nice to meet all of you. Andi
talks a lot about you all.
LIAM
Same here. We've all been so excited
to meet the girl that Andi finally
won't shut up about.
ANDI
Ugh, y'all are annoying.
CLAUDIA
Nah, it's cute.
ANDI
(blushing)
Good. Cause I won't stop.
Beat.
ANDI (CONT'D)
Anyways, we've been seeing each other
for, what, a month now? Figured it was
time for you to meet the people I
spend all the rest of my time with.
LIAM
(a little passive-aggressive)
And we're excited to scope out the one
that takes up all of Andi's Friday
nights.
Beat. It's a little awkward.
ZACH
(coughing)
So, Claudia, what are your hobbies?
CLAUDIA
I don't have many. I work most days at
the bar, and those are pretty rough
shifts, so I don't have much free
time. But I guess I have a few
hobbies--they're mostly grandma-style
craft stuff, though: latch hooking,
crochet, sewing. I love to cook.
ANDI
Really? I didn't know that about you.
CLAUDIA
That's because if I told you, I knew
you'd want me to cook for you. And I
wasn't ready for that kind of
commitment yet.
ANDI
So... why are you mentioning it now?
CLAUDIA
Because maybe I finally feel sure
about you.
The two smile at each other. Liam rolls his eyes.
LYDIA
What do you cook?
CLAUDIA
Nothing all that special. And I don't
do it often, it's really for when I
have a girl over or I'm hosting a
dinner party or something. So not
often. I make a mean grilled cheese,
though.
ANDI
You'll have to prove it.
LYDIA
(jokingly)
Y'all are too much.
Cut to:
EXT. RESTAURANT - NIGHT.
Liam, Lydia, and Zach stand outside the restaurant. A shot of  Andi saying goodbye to Claudia, who sits in her car with the  window open. Andi runs back to the group as Claudia drives  off, and the group starts toward their car.
ANDI
So... thoughts?
LYDIA
She's really charming, Andi.
ZACH
I like her. I think she balances you.
ANDI
The hell is that supposed to mean?
LYDIA
No, I get what he means. You're a
little... uptight, I guess. She seems
to loosen you up.
Andi nods, waiting for Liam to respond. He doesn't.
ANDI
Liam, you've been pretty quiet.
LIAM
(shrugging)
She's cute, I guess. I see why you
like her.
She waits for him to say more.
LIAM (CONT'D)
(sighs)
I just... I can see that you're
falling really hard and really
quickly. And I just don't want to see
you get hurt.
ANDI
I've been seeing her for a month, it's
not that serious. We haven't even
kissed yet.
They all get into the car.
INT. LIAM'S CAR - NIGHT
ZACH
Wait... you haven't kissed yet?
ANDI
Yeah? We're taking things slow, what's  the big deal?
ZACH
I don't know, it just seemed like you
guys were really into each other.
ANDI
We are. I mean, I know I am. And I
think she feels the same way.
Beat.
ANDI (CONT'D)
I was planning on kissing her this
weekend. We have plans to see a movie,
and then I'm dropping her off at her
place.
ZACH
Okay. And you're not gonna chicken
out?
ANDI
I'm not gonna chicken out.
Liam pulls out of the parking lot.
SCENE 6
EXT. A GARDEN - DAY
It's Zach's brother's wedding. The whole group is there,  including Claudia, who is Andi's plus-one. It's been a week  since the last scene.
Andi is standing alone with a Champagne flute, sipping. Zach  approaches her.
ZACH
Where's Claudia?
ANDI
(startled)
Oh, fuck!
ZACH
(laughing)
Sorry.
ANDI
She's in the bathroom.
ZACH
Ah. So you never told us about that
magical kiss from the other night.
ANDI
That's cause I chickened out.
ZACH
I fucking knew you would.
ANDI
It wasn't the right time! I was about
to do it, like we were on her porch
and I was gonna lean in, but her
sister called with some emergency and
she had to go.
ZACH
Excuses, excuses.
ANDI
Whatever.
(changing the subject)
I'm so happy for Alex, though! It's
such a beautiful day.
ZACH
Yeah, he was so scared it was gonna
rain.
ANDI
It was really cool of him to give me a
plus-one.
ZACH
You're his favorite of my friends.
Plus, I may have told him you're
seeing someone.
ANDI
(punching him playfully)
Thanks.
Claudia enters from inside and walks over to them
CLAUDIA
Those toilets are too fancy, they're
freaking me out.
ZACH
That's Alex, for ya. He loves the
classy shit.
CLAUDIA
No, seriously. There was a girl in a
tux just standing there with warm
towels after I washed my hands.
ALEX enters, obviously making the rounds. He's also just a  little bit tipsy.
ALEX
Andi! How are you doing, gorgeous?
ANDI
(hugging him)
I'm good! This wedding is absolutely
stunning. I'm so happy for you.
ALEX
Thank you. I'm so happy that you're
here.
(turning to Claudia)
And you... are you the one Andi's been
hiding from me?
CLAUDIA
(reaching out to take his hand)
I sure am. Claudia. Congratulations.
ALEX
(accepting her hand and shaking)
Thank you so much. And thank you for
coming.
Beat. Alex makes eye contact with someone off-screen and waves.
ALEX (CONT'D)
I'd better leave y'all. I have to make
the rounds. But drink more, please! We
have an open bar and way too much
champagne.
He exits.
ANDI
I fucking love your brother.
ZACH
He's a character, alright.
CLAUDIA
I'm dying for a gin and tonic, you
want anything?
ANDI
I'll come with you.
Follow them to the bar, where they order.
CLAUDIA
So... you've been hiding me?
ANDI
Oh, god. No. Alex is just... like
that. You saw. And I've been busy, so
I haven't talked to him recently.
CLAUDIA
(Kissing her on the cheek)
I know. I'm kidding.
ANDI
I haven't met any of your friends,
though. Who are you hiding me from?
CLAUDIA
I don't have many friends. It's really
just Leah, but she doesn't live in the
area, so.
ANDI
I find it hard to believe that you, a
bartender, don't have any friends.
Especially with your personality.
CLAUDIA
Oh, yeah. My personality really draws
everyone in.
ANDI
I'm serious. You're charismatic.
Likable. So what gives?
CLAUDIA
(shrugging)
Guess I'm just introverted.
Beat. She was expecting this to satisfy Andi, but it doesn't.
CLAUDIA (CONT'D)
Plus, working at a bar means that I
get sick of people really easily.
ANDI
Well, if you ever want me to meet
Leah...
CLAUDIA
Of course. She's actually, uh, she's
moving here in like a month. She's
gonna try to find jobs in the area.
ANDI
Oh that's so cool! You'll be so close.
I'd love to take her out for coffee.
CLAUDIA
Alright, but keep in mind that I don't
have a relationship with my parents,
so Leah's the only family I've got.
ANDI
Wow. No pressure.
CLAUDIA
She'll love you.
Andi brushes a lock of Claudia's hair behind her ear.
ANDI
I wanted to do this the other night,
but...
CLAUDIA
Yeah?
ANDI
(nodding)
Yeah.
She kisses her. It's tender, sweet, but they both do recognize that they're in public.
ANDI (CONT'D)
I really, really like you.
Claudia blushes.
SCENE 7
INT./EXT. CLAUDIA'S CAR - NIGHT.
A few months later. Immediately after a date. Claudia is  driving with Andi in the passenger seat. Claudia's hand rests  on Andi's thigh.
CLAUDIA
I don't think I like that restaurant.
ANDI
(leaning over to kiss her cheek)
Why?
CLAUDIA
We've been there, what, like five
times now? And every single time my
tummy hurts after.
ANDI
Maybe you just can't handle spice.
CLAUDIA
It's not that!
ANDI
Hmmm. Maybe you should just cook for
us from now on.
CLAUDIA
Oh, so I'm having you over every night
for dinner now?
ANDI
I mean, I'm over there most evenings,
anyway.
CLAUDIA
True.
Silence.
CLAUDIA (CONT'D)
Y'know... I just had a thought. It's
an undeveloped thought, and I'm not
attached to it, so feel free to shut
it down if you hate it.
ANDI
Oh... kay. You're kinda scaring me.
CLAUDIA
What if... I'm just saying, hear me
out, okay, what if you moved in?
Beat.
ANDI
Oh.
CLAUDIA
Like I said, not attached to it.
ANDI
Okay.
CLAUDIA
Okay, as in, you understand that I'm
not attached to it, or okay as in
you'll move in?
ANDI
Okay, as in I'll move in.
CLAUDIA
Oh shit, really?
ANDI
I mean, yeah? I guess? I don't know,
my horoscope today said to say yes to
things. So I'm saying yes.
CLAUDIA
Off a fucking horoscope? I thought you
said you didn't really believe in that
shit?
ANDI
I don't. I mean. Kinda. I don't
normally, but sometimes something
resonates. And it resonated in this
situation. So I'm saying yes.
CLAUDIA
So you're moving in?
ANDI
Yes?
CLAUDIA
Well, now you don't sound sure.
ANDI
I'm sure! I'm sure. God damn. I'm
sure.
CLAUDIA
Really?
ANDI
Oh my god, Claudia.
CLAUDIA
Right, right. So we're moving in
together.
ANDI
(staring at her with a giant smile)
We're moving in together.
They kiss.
Fade out.
SCENE 8
INT. ANDI AND CLAUDIA'S APARTMENT - NIGHT.
Claudia, Andi, Leah, Zach, and Lydia are in the living room  of the apartment. Leah and Zach are playing Just Dance. She  is beating him by a lot.
ZACH
(Frantically moving to the screen)
Oh, fuck off!
LEAH
(laughing maniacally)
It's not my fault you're so bad at
this.
ZACH
It's not mine that you have a dance
degree!
LYDIA
(from the couch)
You're the one that wanted to play
her, asshole!
ZACH
Don't turn this on me!
CLAUDIA
Yeah, you're a victim of your own
hubris. Deal with it.
The dance ends. Zach collapses on the ground, exhausted. Leah  starts laughing.
LEAH
(pointing at him on the ground)
Get fucked.
They all laugh.
LEAH (CONT'D)
Alright, who wants to go next?
A noticeable silence.
LEAH (CONT'D)
Oh come on, no one?
ANDI
Babe, I think you've scared us all. I
mean, look at Zach.
Leah looks at him, arm over his eyes on the floor, still  breathing hard. She laughs.
The sound of the door closing. Liam enters the room with a  bottle of wine.
LIAM
Hey!
LYDIA
You're late.
LIAM
Not my fault. Work needed me overtime.
LYDIA
It's 8pm.
LIAM
Okay. Maybe I went out with a coworker
after.
ZACH
(bolting up)
Pray tell.
LIAM
It was nothing, just Emma.
ZACH
Sexy Emma?
LIAM
... Maybe.
ZACH
Dude, I'm telling you she likes you.
LIAM
I don't know. I'm just not really
interested in a relationship right
now.
(beat. Then, seeing Leah:)
Anyway. I'm so sorry. You must be
Leah.
LEAH
(walking over to greet him)
Yup. You're Liam, I take it?
LIAM
Yeah. It's nice to meet you. Claudia's
told us a lot.
LEAH
Same here. You play Just Dance?
ZACH
NO! Do NOT play Just Dance with her.
She will kick your ass. You will
regret it.
Fade out.
SCENE 9
INT. A COFFEE SHOP - DAY
Claudia and Leah are sitting at a table. It's the same coffee  shop as Claudia and Andi's first date.
LEAH
(looking at her phone)
I'm having zero luck finding jobs.
CLAUDIA
You get another rejection?
LEAH
No. Just another company who won't
respond to my email trying to set up
an interview.
CLAUDIA
You don't even want that job, anyway.
LEAH
I know. I want to dance. But this
isn't exactly... the place for it.
CLAUDIA
Yeah, I know.
LEAH
I think... I don't know. I think I'm
gonna have better luck somewhere else.
CLAUDIA
What do you mean?
LEAH
I mean... I guess I-- I've been
thinking about moving back to New
York. Trying my luck there. I wanted
to be close to you, and it's been
great, but I think I need to be with
my people. I can get jobs, or
internships in New York. I just can't
do that here.
CLAUDIA
Oh.
LEAH
I'm sorry, Claud.
CLAUDIA
No, don't apologize. Please. I'll be
fine. I have Andi. And you... you need
to get out there, do your thing.
You're gonna be so great.
LEAH
Yeah?
CLAUDIA
Yeah.
Beat.
CLAUDIA (CONT'D)
When do you think you're leaving?
LEAH
I've talked to an old college friend
of mine, and she's in need of a
roommate. So, I'm thinking maybe I'll
move out in a few weeks.
CLAUDIA
Okay.
LEAH
I'm sorry.
CLAUDIA
I told you. I'll be fine. I'm just
gonna miss you.
LEAH
I'll miss you, too.
Fade out.
SCENE 10
INT. CLAUDIA AND ANDI'S APARTMENT - DAY.
A few months later. Claudia is on the phone with Leah. As she  has the conversation, she bustles around the kitchen, cooking  a grilled cheese.
CLAUDIA
Wait, so like, he finally made a move
on you?
LEAH
(over the phone)
Yes. Fucking finally. I'd been waiting
for months.
CLAUDIA
Okay, but... why did he have to make
the first move? I thought you said
male courting or whatever was a
(mock sophisticated tone)
"patriarchal ideal that needed to be
eradicated in order for us to fix the
interpersonal relationships between
men and women?"
LEAH
(over the phone)
He didn't even make the first move, I
did. I've been flirting with him for
weeks now, and I knew he liked me
back, he just hadn't acted on anything
until last night.
Cut to:
INT./EXT. LEAH'S CAR - HIGHWAY - DAY. CONTINUOUS.
Leah is driving her car. There is no one in the back or  passenger seat.
CLAUDIA
(over the phone)
How did you know he liked you?
LEAH
Cassie and Jay told me.
CLAUDIA
(over the phone)
Oh shit, he told them?
LEAH
Apparently.
CLAUDIA
(over the phone)
So what now? Are you gonna pursue
things with him?
LEAH
(slyly)
I kinda already did.
CLAUDIA
(over the phone)
Oh shut the fuck up, I don't wanna
hear about that! You know what I mean.
Are you going on a date or something?
LEAH
I don't know, dating's not really my
thing.
CLAUDIA
Mm. I mean, do what you need to.
Cut to:
INT. CLAUDIA AND ANDI'S APARTMENT - CONTINUOUS.
Claudia is still making her grilled cheese. She leans on the  counter next to the stove, gently poking at the grilled  cheese in the pan with a spatula.
Claudia flips the grilled cheese over and examines it. It's  perfectly golden brown and the cheese is gloriously melted.  It's a grilled cheese that might as well have been made by  God, himself. She turns off the stove.
Claudia walks over to the cupboard and grabs a plate. She  sets it down on the counter, then takes the spatula and  transfers the grilled cheese to the plate. She takes a knife  and cuts the sandwich in a perfect diagonal line. She doesn't  pick it up yet, as it's too hot, but she waits for a minute.  As she's waiting:
CLAUDIA (CONT.)
So, Andi and I are going to see Liam
this weekend. Are you gonna be in
town?
LEAH
(over the phone)
I don't know, maybe. Callie has a
cabin up in Wisconsin that she wants
to take us to sometime soon. Might be
this weekend, who knows.
CLAUDIA
Well, let me know if you're in town
when we're there. You should come hang
out with us.
LEAH
(over the phone)
And Liam? No thanks.
CLAUDIA
Oh, come on. What's your deal with
him, anyway?
LEAH
(over the phone)
I just think he's pretentious.
CLAUDIA
(scoffs)
You'd be right about that.
Claudia places a hand gently on the grilled cheese to test  the heat. Convinced that she won't burn the skin off the roof  of her mouth, she takes a bite.
LEAH
(over the phone)
How is Andi, by the way?
CLAUDIA
(with a mouth full)
She's good. Busy.
LEAH
(over the phone)
What are you eating?
CLAUDIA
(swallows hard)
Grilled cheese.
Cut to:
EXT. LEAH'S CAR - HIGHWAY - CONTINUOUS.
LEAH
Ah, the famous Claudia Ross grilled
cheese.
CLAUDIA
(over the phone)
The very same.
LEAH
Little bit of butter in the pan and on
each slice of bread?
CLAUDIA
(over the phone)
You know it.
LEAH
Toasted to a golden brown?
CLAUDIA
(over the phone)
Mmm-hmm.
LEAH
I forget, do you add tomato?
CLAUDIA
(over the phone)
Ew, no. That's Dad's thing.
LEAH
I thought his thing was using muenster
and cheddar.
CLAUDIA
(over the phone)
Well, that, too. But I hate the
tomato. It gets soggy.
LEAH
I guess you're right.
Cut to:
INT. CLAUDIA AND ANDI'S APARTMENT - CONTINUOUS.
Andi walks in the front door, right next to the kitchen. She  looks exhausted. She walks to the kitchen counter and sets  her bag down.
CLAUDIA
Hey, Andi.
ANDI
Hi, Claud. Grilled cheese?
CLAUDIA
Yep.
LEAH
(over the phone)
Hi, Andi!
ANDI
Oh, Leah? Sorry, didn't realize you
were on the phone. How goes it?
LEAH
(over the phone)
It goes good. I'm good. How's work?
ANDI
Fucking abysmal.
LEAH
(over the phone)
Good for you.
ANDI
Oh, Leah, are we gonna see you this
weekend?
LEAH
(over the phone)
Maybe. Probably not. I might be in
Wisconsin with some friends.
ANDI
Pisser. Alright, next time, then.
LEAH
(over the phone)
Sure thing.
ANDI
Okay, I'm gonna go take a shower
because I look and feel like poo.
She walks over to Claudia and gives her a peck on the cheek,  then exits.
LEAH
(over the phone)
Sheesh. She's wired.
CLAUDIA
Yeah. She's been going through it,
recently. She's never home.
Cut to:
EXT. LEAH'S CAR - HIGHWAY - CONTINUOUS.
LEAH
Yeah, well, that's what you get for
dating a career gal. A girl boss.
CLAUDIA
(over the phone)
Oh god, don't make me gag.
LEAH
I'm just teasing.
CLAUDIA
(over the phone, monotone)
Ha ha.
Cut to:
INT. CLAUDIA AND ANDI'S APARTMENT - CONTINUOUS.
CLAUDIA
Speaking of girl bosses, how's the job
search coming? Find any leads?
LEAH
(over the phone, sarcastically)
Oh, yeah, everyone's to hire a dying
dance major with a specialization in
tap to work their nine-to-five.
CLAUDIA
You'll find something soon. I can feel
it.
LEAH
(over the phone)
Glad "feels it." someone
CLAUDIA
No, I'm serious. You're smart, you did
great in school, and you have an
English minor, you're gonna be--
Claudia is interrupted by a sudden noise coming from the  other end of the call. A crashing noise. It goes on for a few  seconds before ending with one last large crash noise.
CLAUDIA (CONT.)
What the hell was that?
No answer.
CLAUDIA (CONT.) (CONT'D)
Leah? You there?
There's a hissing sound coming through the other end, like  stone falling and smoke.
CLAUDIA (CONT.) (CONT'D)
(more concerned)
Leah? Are you okay?
Cut to:
EXT. THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY, A STEEP CLIFF - DAY.
A car is overturned at the bottom of a steep but short cliff.  It smokes, and glass is shattered all over the outside of the  car.
Cut to:
INT. CLAUDIA AND ANDI'S APARTMENT - CONTINUOUS.
CLAUDIA (CONT.)
(frantic)
Leah? Leah, what happened? Answer me!
(beat.)
LEAH. What's going on, dammit?
Andi emerges from the bathroom, covered by a robe. Her hair  is still dry.
ANDI
What's going on?
Claudia just shakes her head, confused.
CLAUDIA
Leah? Fuck, Leah!
(beat.)
LEAH!
(she starts to cry)
LEAH! LEAH!
She repeats Leah's name over and over, sobbing as she's doing  it. Claudia collapses onto the kitchen floor, clutching her  phone. Andi rushes over and crouches next to her on the floor, rubbing her shoulder.
Cut to:
EXT. THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY, A STEEP CLIFF - DAY.
The car is still smoking. No one is at the scene yet, but  police sirens are heard in the distance.
Cut to:
INT./EXT. INSIDE LEAH'S CAR, THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY - DAY.
Leah, still fastened in her seat, hangs upside down. Blood  spills down (or up) her face, past her eyes and into her  hair, which hangs. It drips slowly down toward the roof of  the car. She doesn't move. Her eyes are open, but lifeless.
Fade out.
SCENE 11
EXT. A CHURCH - DAY.
Leah's funeral. It's a surprisingly nice day, but the mood is  cloudy. Andi and Claudia stand in a circle with Lydia, Zach,  and Liam. Liam smokes a cigarette.
LYDIA
That was a beautiful service.
CLAUDIA
(nodding)
Thanks for being here, guys.
LYDIA
Of course. We all loved Leah.
CLAUDIA
She would never admit it, because she
hated admitting that anyone I hang out
with is cool, but she really liked you
all, too.
ZACH
Remember when she convinced us to play
drunk Just Dance? God, she killed.
ANDI
Well, the competition wasn't exactly
rough. You're a klutz sober.
ZACH
Alright, no need to rub it in.
ANDI
(shivering)
Oh, it just got cold. I'm gonna grab
my jacket from the car.
LYDIA
I'll come with.
ZACH
Me, too.
The three of them exit, leaving just Liam and Claudia alone.  Other people mill about, maybe a few come up to Claudia and  give their condolences, but mostly they just stand there in silence.
LIAM
I don't think I ever said it, but I'm
sorry for your loss.
CLAUDIA
Thanks. She was my best friend.
LIAM
I get that. I dealt with something
similar back in high school.
CLAUDIA
(turning toward him)
Really?
LIAM
What, you think I've never experienced
grief?
CLAUDIA
No, I just... I don't know what I
think.
Silence.
CLAUDIA (CONT'D)
What happened?
LIAM
(finishing his cigarette and
stomping it out on the ground)
My best friend sophomore year of high
school. Mason. He was out driving on
the weekend, past curfew, but he was
sober. Someone who wasn’t, though, ran
a red light and crashed into him.
Mason wasn't wearing a seatbelt.
(beat.)
Sorry if that was upsetting, or too
soon, or anything. I just mean that I
can relate, or whatever, to what
you're going through. Lost someone I
loved way too young, in an all too
preventable way.
CLAUDIA
(sincerely)
Thank you. For sharing that with me.
Really. No one else I know has gone
through this, and it's honestly really
isolating. Andi doesn't know what to
do except make me mac n' cheese and
turn on The Bachelorette whenever I
get sad.
LIAM
Do you like to be alone? While
grieving?
Claudia nods.
LIAM (C0NT'D)
I do, too. No one gets it. They want
to hug you, tell you it's all alright,
but they don't get that sometimes you
just want to be alone.
He notices that Claudia is staring at a couple, who are  huddled near the entrance of the church. People are  continually coming up to them and giving their condolences.
LIAM (CONT'D)
Those your parents?
CLAUDIA
(snapping out of her trance)
What? Oh, yeah.
LIAM
How are they taking everything?
CLAUDIA
(shrugging)
I don't know, really. We don't talk. I
called my mom right after it happened,
but I blacked out the entire
conversation. And they messaged me
about funeral details, but nothing
mushy. We're definitely not grieving
together.
LIAM
Why is that? Shouldn't you be with
family right now?
CLAUDIA
They're homophobes. I haven't seen
them in six years, since they threw me
out of the house when I came out.
LIAM
Shit, I'm so sorry.
CLAUDIA
What're you gonna do? People
disappoint you, sometimes. And Andi's
been my rock, so I don't need them.
Plus, it's my fucking fault that she's
dead.
LIAM
What do you mean?
CLAUDIA
I was on the phone with her when it
happened. And if I hadn't been, she
wouldn't have been distracted, and she
wouldn't have swerved on the fucking
highway and flipped her car over a
goddamn cliff.
LIAM
Shit.
CLAUDIA
Yeah.
LIAM
I mean, you know it's not your really
fault, right?
CLAUDIA
Everyone keeps saying that. I just
wish I could believe them.
He opens his mouth to say something, but loses it. Before he  can say what he wanted to, the rest of the group return with  jackets, and Andi hands Claudia hers.
ANDI
What were y'all talking about?
LIAM
(chuckles)
Shared loss.
Andi smiles awkwardly. She doesn't know how to respond to that.
ANDI
Oh. Well, glad to see you're getting
along, I guess.
Fade out.
SCENE 11
INT. ANDI AND CLAUDIA'S APARTMENT - NIGHT.
Immediately after the funeral. Andi and Claudia stumble in,  both exhausted. Claudia collapses on the couch and closes her  eyes. Andi sits on the couch kitty-corner from Claudia's and  gently rubs her arm.
ANDI
You okay, babe?
CLAUDIA
No.
ANDI
Yeah. I could've guessed that.
CLAUDIA
I can't believe I'm never gonna see
her again.
ANDI
You meant the world to her. She loved
you.
CLAUDIA
I just wanna sleep.
ANDI
(getting up)
Right.
CLAUDIA
I'm sorry. I know you're just trying
to help. I'm... I'm exhausted and I
think if I spend any more time talking
about it, I'll spiral out of control.
ANDI
I get it. It's okay, love.
CLAUDIA
(sitting up)
I think I wanna smoke a bowl.
ANDI
A bowl? Now? I thought you wanted to
go to sleep?
CLAUDIA
If I go to sleep, I'll dream about
her. If I smoke a bowl first, I won't
dream at all.
ANDI
Okay. Whatever you wanna do.
CLAUDIA
Will you join me?
ANDI
If you want. Are you sure you want my
company right now?
CLAUDIA
I can't be alone.
ANDI
(walking back over to the couch
and kissing her on the forehead)
Of course. Let me pack it.
Fade out.
SCENE 12
INT. A COFFEE SHOP - DAY
Andi enters the coffee shop, alone and on the phone. She  stands in line and talks as she waits.
ANDI
I'm just worried about her. And work
is picking up and I can't exactly,
like... stop working. So I can't be
there for her the way that I probably
need to.
LYDIA
(over the phone)
It... it kinda seems like she needs to
grieve privately. Every time you try
to talk to her about it, she shuts you
down.
ANDI
Yeah. I just don't know how to be
there for her. It feels wrong to just
let her be and pretend that
everything's okay.
LYDIA
(over the phone)
What does she do when she isn't
talking to you?
ANDI
Smoking. A of weed. And drinking. lot
I think she's been skipping some
shifts at work. I know that she's
grieving, but it's been a month now
and I'm afraid that she's self
imploding. She was already in a
fragile state.
LYDIA
(over the phone)
I don't know what to say, babe. I've
never been through this before. But
Claudia knows that you love her. She
knows that you're there for her.
ANDI
Yeah. I guess. I just wish I could
make it better.
LYDIA
(over the phone)
Yeah.
Beat. It's Andi's turn to order,
ANDI
Alright, I'm about to order. I should
probably let you go.
LYDIA
(over the phone)
Alright. Let me know if you need
anything. Enjoy your chai.
ANDI
Thanks. Love you.
LYDIA
(over the phone)
Love you. Bye.
Andi hangs up and steps to the counter.
ANDI
Hi. Can I get a twenty-ounce chai
latte?
Fade out.
SCENE 13
INT. CLAUDIA AND ANDI'S APARTMENT - NIGHT
Claudia sits on the couch, watching TV and drinking a cider.  Andi walks in, clearly exhausted.
ANDI
Hey, love.
She walks over to Claudia and kisses her on the forehead.  Claudia doesn't respond.
ANDI (CONT'D)
Claud? Did you hear me?
CLAUDIA
(irritated)
Yes. I heard you.
ANDI
You didn't respond.
CLAUDIA
I'm tired.
ANDI
So am I.
CLAUDIA
Well, look at you go.
ANDI
I just... would love to be
acknowledged by my girlfriend after
coming home from work.
CLAUDIA
(not genuine)
Sorry.
ANDI
Whatever.
She notices that the sink is full of dishes.
ANDI (CONT'D)
(tentative)
Hey, Claud?
CLAUDIA
(not looking up)
Mm?
ANDI
I thought you said you were gonna do
the dishes today.
CLAUDIA
I forgot.
ANDI
Okay. Well, you forgot yesterday, too.
CLAUDIA
I was busy.
ANDI
Doing what? You haven't gone to work
in days.
CLAUDIA
Get off my back, please, Andi.
ANDI
(sighs)
Look, I understand what you're going
through. But I... I feel like I'm
doing everything around here, and
trying to support you, and I just...
I'd appreciate it if you could meet me
halfway on some things.
CLAUDIA
Okay. Fucking fine. I'll do the
dishes.
She gets up and slams her bottle on the table.
ANDI
Let's do it after dinner. Might as
well.
(noticing that the oven isn't on)
Did you start dinner?
CLAUDIA
I figured we could order a pizza
again.
ANDI
We've ordered takeout three days this
week. I can't afford that. Neither can
you.
CLAUDIA
I'm too exhausted to cook, Andi.
Andi sighs.
CLAUDIA (CONT'D)
What?
ANDI
Nothing.
CLAUDIA
That's a lie.
ANDI
I get that you're still grieving, I
do. And I'm trying to be sympathetic
to that. But I am doing everything by
myself. And I'm trying to be there for
you emotionally. But I don't feel like
you are pulling any weight. I need
help, Claud.
CLAUDIA
I'm not pulling my weight.
ANDI
I know you can't pull your full weight
right now. But just a little. Just...
do the fucking dishes sometimes.
CLAUDIA
Whatever. Get whatever you want for
dinner, I'm going to bed.
She leaves.
Andi watches her go, then leans on the counter with her head  in her hands. Beat.
She breaks down crying.
Fade out.
SCENE 14
INT. ZACH'S HOUSE - NIGHT
Andi, Liam, Zach, and Lydia are lounging in Zach's kitchen,  surrounding the island. They're drinking, but it's not a  party. Just friends getting together for drinks and  conversation.
They're playing a drinking game, "Never Have I Ever." It's  late-ish in the night, and all of them are at least tipsy.  Liam is noticeably drunk.
LYDIA
Okay... never have I ever been to the
third grade.
The rest of them groan and drink. Zach flips her the bird.
ZACH
You can't use that every single time
we play, dude.
LYDIA
I skipped the third grade, it's the
only leverage I have over you
dumbasses.
ANDI
Liam, you're up.
LIAM
Never have I ever dated someone of the
same sex.
Zach and Andi roll their eyes and drink.
ANDI
That's a cheap one.
LIAM
What, you mean you're not okay with me
using you as my token queer friend?
ANDI
That's not funny, Liam.
LIAM
Whatever. Your turn.
ANDI
Never have I ever been to South
America.
No one drinks.
ANDI (CONT'D)
Really? No one?
Everyone shakes their head.
ZACH
Never have I ever cheated on someone.
There's a moment of silence, then Liam slowly and awkwardly  takes a drink.
LYDIA
No shit, on who?
LIAM
Grace.
LYDIA
Are you kidding me, Liam? How'd you
fuck that one up?
ZACH
That's why you two broke up? Jesus,
she was perfect for you. Actually, she
was for you. She made you, too good
like, normal.
LIAM
I don't want to talk about it.
ZACH
I just can't believe you fucked up the
one good thing that's happened to you
since college.
Liam is suddenly angry. Scary-angry.
LIAM
Fuck you. I said I didn't want to talk
about it.
LYDIA
Dude, calm down.
This, naturally, does not work. Liam downs the rest of his  bottle of cider and pointedly drops it on the floor,  shattering it.
LYDIA (CONT'D)
What the hell is wrong with you?
LIAM
I told you. I didn't want to talk
about it.
ZACH
That doesn't mean you get to just
start breaking shit!
LIAM
Fuck all of you.
He exits the room and we hear a door slam.
ZACH
I'm getting really sick of his shit.
ANDI
(sighs)
I'm gonna go check on him.
ZACH
What the hell? Leave him alone, he's
dangerous right now.
ANDI
He exited through the garage, I just
wanna make sure he's not planning on
driving drunk.
LYDIA
Did you not see what he just did? Like
Zach said, he's dangerous in this
state.
ANDI
He's more dangerous behind the wheel.
I'll be fine. I've dealt with his
tantrums before.
She exits.
INT. ZACH'S GARAGE - NIGHT.
Andi enters the garage and finds the door closed. Liam is  leaning against the corner, smoking a cigarette. He scoffs  when he sees her.
LIAM
You always have to be the savior,
don't you?
ANDI
I'm just making sure you weren't
planning on leaving.
LIAM
Why do you care?
ANDI
Because you're drunk.
He nods, takes a drag and sighs.
LIAM
Andi, I wanna tell you something.
She just stares at him and shrugs in a "go on" kind of way.
LIAM (CONT'D)
I've had a crush on you since freshman
year of college.
ANDI
Liam, don't--
LIAM
Let me finish! Let me fucking finish.
He takes another drag.
LIAM (CONT'D)
I've been falling in love with you
since the moment you first raised your
hand in Psych 101. And I've watched
you get hurt by so many people who
don't deserve you, and I'm sick of it.
He looks to her, expecting her to interrupt, but she doesn't.
LIAM (CONT'D)
And I probably don't deserve you, I
know that, because nobody does. You're
smart and kind and beautiful and...
and nobody deserves you!
(beat.)
Especially not Claudia. She's been a
shitty girlfriend.
ANDI
She's been through a lot, you know
that.
LIAM
So have you. And you're not a complete
and total bitch
ANDI
Don't use that word. She may not be not
the best partner right now, but I'm
trying to support her. She lost the
only family she had left. She gets a
little leeway.
LIAM
She's not good to you, Andi.
ANDI
(beat.)
You know, I came out here because I
felt bad for you. But I've dealt with
your bullshit for nearly a decade, I'm
done. Drive home and crash for all I
care.
She starts to leave, but Liam grabs her wrist and pins her  against the wall.
ANDI (CONT'D)
Liam, you are scaring me. Let go of
me.
LIAM
Kiss me.
ANDI
Let. Go.
He kisses her, and she wrestles him off of her, then rushes  out of the garage.
LIAM
(calling after her)
All I've ever done is love you!
But she's gone. He throws his cigarette on the ground.
LIAM (CONT'D)
Fuck!
Fade out.
SCENE 15
INT. CLAUDIA AND ANDI'S APARTMENT - NIGHT.
Later that night. Claudia is sitting at the table, eating a  grilled cheese. Andi walks into the apartment, a little  tipsy.
ANDI
(seeing Claudia)
Oh. You're awake.
CLAUDIA
Couldn't sleep.
ANDI
(walking over and kissing her
cheek)
How was your night?
CLAUDIA
Same old, same old. Got stoned and
watched You? The Bachelorette.
ANDI
Shit.
CLAUDIA
Why?
ANDI
Liam.
CLAUDIA
What'd he do this time?
ANDI
He... okay. I haven't actually
processed this yet, so I'm not exactly
sure if I reacted the way that I
should've and I... I'm just gonna
start talking because he did something
really fucking bad tonight.
CLAUDIA
Okay...
ANDI
He... We were playing Never Have I
Ever, and Zach said something that
pissed him off, I guess, and he
stormed into the garage. I went to
make sure he didn't leave drunk,
and... he started going on this rant.
About how he's been in love with me
since college. And I told him to fuck
off, but...
CLAUDIA
What the fuck?
ANDI
That's not all. Um. I tried to leave,
but he grabbed me. And then, he kissed
me.
CLAUDIA
Oh.
ANDI
Yeah.
CLAUDIA
He kissed you?
Andi nods, teary-eyed.
CLAUDIA (CONT'D)
Have you told anyone?
ANDI
Just you.
CLAUDIA
And... did you kiss him back?
ANDI
What the fuck? No!
CLAUDIA
I'm just checking.
ANDI
Do you really think that low of me?
CLAUDIA
No. I-- I just wanted to make sure. I
always got a weird feeling about him.
ANDI
Claudia, I-- Holy fuck.
CLAUDIA
I don't think you'd actually kiss him.
ANDI
The fact that you even had to ask...
CLAUDIA
Why are you getting so defensive?
ANDI
Why do you think I'd cheat on you with
Liam?!
CLAUDIA
Okay, I'm sorry.
ANDI
I was fucking assaulted tonight. And
you... you have the audacity to ask if
I liked it? If I kissed him back?
CLAUDIA
Andi, it was a moment of weakness. I'm
not in a good mental state.
ANDI
Neither am I. And I don't go around
accusing you of fucking adultery.
She exits to the bedroom, slamming the door.
CLAUDIA
Andi. Fuck.
Fade out.
SCENE 16
INT./EXT. CLAUDIA'S CAR - NIGHT.
Immediately after the last scene. Claudia is driving,  clearing her head.
She's on the verge of tears. U2's "One" is playing on the  radio. She turns it up and starts crying full-on, then starts  to hyperventilate.
CLAUDIA
(whispered, to herself)
Fuck. Fuck. Not now. God.
She can't breathe. She pulls over.
CLAUDIA (CONT'D)
No. No. No. No.
She starts lightly hitting herself on the forehead.
CLAUDIA (CONT'D)
Don't fucking do this.
She lets out a sob. Then, a moment later, a scream. She beats  the steering wheel as she screams.
Fade out.
SCENE 17
INT. A DINER - NIGHT.
A few weeks later. Claudia is sitting at a table, alone.  There are several other customers in the diner, but not many.  A couple of servers are scattered about, waiting tables,  counting tips, working the register. Claudia's leg is  bouncing up and down rapidly, and does not stop. She looks  around, like she's looking for somebody, before returning her  sight to her hand and picking at her cuticles.
PENNY
Whoever he is, he's an ass for
standing you up.
Claudia smirks, eyes still glued to her hands, and breathes a  gust of air out of her nose. A half-laugh, if you will.
PENNY (CONT.)
You've been here for half an hour. If
he hasn't come by now, he isn't coming
at all.
(beat.)
I'm gonna need you to order something
soon.
Claudia looks for a moment at Penny, awkwardly, before  looking back down and sighing.
CLAUDIA
It's not a he. I'm... waiting for a
woman.
PENNY
Doesn't change the fact that she's an
ass. Or the fact that I need you to
order something if you're gonna stay
in my booth.
Claudia chuckles.
CLAUDIA
Well, I wasn't expecting much, anyway.
(beat.)
I'll take a lemonade. And... a grilled
cheese.
PENNY
Anything else?
CLAUDIA
Nope.
She goes to leave, then stops and places her hand on the  table.
PENNY
I really hope she comes. I hate seeing
you all sad.
Claudia gives a half-smile.
CLAUDIA
Thanks, uhh...
(looking at Penny's name tag.)
Penny. I appreciate that.
Penny taps the table softly before turning around and heading  to the kitchen. Claudia watches her leave, and then takes her  phone out of her pocket and looks at it. No messages.
A ding from the diner's door. Claudia looks up expectantly,  but doesn't recognize the person walking through the door.  She rolls her eyes and turns back to the phone, only to see  that it's illuminated.
Close up of the phone. It's a text from Andi, reading: "Hey.  I'll meet you. Diner on 64 and Moss, right?"
Claudia picks up the phone with urgency, and quickly sends a  message, then sets the phone down and smiles. She brings her  knees up to her chest in excitement, squeezing herself  between the table and the booth, and rests her chin on her  knees, staring at the phone on the table, daring it to buzz.  It does. She picks it up again, and we get another close up  of the phone. It reads, again from Andi: "Ok. I'm in the  parking lot. See you in a sec"
Claudia turns the phone off and buries her head in her knees,  then places her feet on the floor and adjusts her posture so  that her spine is stick-straight. She folds her hands on the  table, looking like a mockery of a poised person, like  someone trying way too hard to be "proper." Her leg still  bounces up and down, and her eyes dart frantically back and  forth between her hands on the table and the door. Eventually  her eyes land and stick on her hands.
A ding. Claudia looks up. Andi enters, sees Claudia, and  walks over and sits across from her in the booth. She smiles  without teeth. It's almost a condescending smile.
ANDI
Hey, Claud.
CLAUDIA
Hey. Thank you for coming. You have no
idea how much this means--
ANDI
Please don't do that.
Beat.
CLAUDIA
Do what?
ANDI
Get excited. I said I'd meet you, I
never said I'd forgive you.
CLAUDIA
(stammering.)
I know, it's just... you coming here,
that's good, right? You wouldn't be
here if you weren't willing to at
least hear me out, right?
ANDI
Claudia--
CLAUDIA
No. Don't call me that.
ANDI
That's your name.
CLAUDIA
Not to you, it isn't. You only call me
that when you're mad at me, when you
want me to go away.
ANDI
I never did that.
CLAUDIA
(scoffs)
Oh, yes, you did. Maybe you didn't
notice, but I did. You only called me
Claudia when you wanted nothing to do
with me.
ANDI
I've never wanted nothing to do with
you.
CLAUDIA
Then what is this? You ignore me for
three weeks, don't respond to any of
my calls, texts, emails, anything. And
then you show up tonight? What the
fuck?
ANDI
I wasn't ready to talk to you, yet.
CLAUDIA
Yeah, no shit. But you're ready now?
Didn't you say you weren't ready just
to forgive me?
ANDI
Listening and forgiving aren't the
same thing.
CLAUDIA
Maybe not, but one leads into the
other.
Beat. Neither of them talk, and they avoid eye contact. Andi  is calm, she almost looks solemn. Sad for Claudia. Claudia's  leg bounces more intensely, and her face is filled with rage.  She stares at the table, Andi stares at her.
ANDI
What did you want to talk about?
CLAUDIA
(still staring at the table)
Does it matter? Are you gonna listen?
ANDI
I always listen.
CLAUDIA
(passively-aggressively)
You didn't that night.
ANDI
That's beside the point. I was angry.
Claudia looks up at her. She sighs.
CLAUDIA
I wanted to explain.
ANDI
Then explain.
Beat. Claudia's eyes drift from Andi, and she starts picking  at her cuticles.
CLAUDIA
(still staring at her hands)
I never wanted to hurt you. That's
first and foremost. I need you to
understand that.
Claudia looks sheepishly up at Andi, who is staring at her, a  mixture of sadness and anger on her face. Beat.
ANDI
(softly)
I know you didn't mean to. That
doesn't change the fact that you did.
CLAUDIA
I understand that. And I want to take
it back, believe me, I have spent so
much time hating myself for what I
did...
ANDI
Please don't make this about your
guilt.
Claudia nods.
CLAUDIA
I know. I'm sorry.
Penny walks up to the table with Claudia's grilled cheese and  lemonade and places them on the table.
PENNY
(to Andi)
Can I get you anything?
ANDI
You have pie?
PENNY
Sure. Only, cherry, though.
ANDI
That's fine. I'll just take a slice.
Penny nods and walks away.
Claudia takes her straw and unwraps it. She places the straw  itself in her lemonade, then ties the straw wrapper in a knot  and pulls until the wrapper breaks in half. She sighs, throws  the two pieces on the table, and sits back in the booth. Andi  watches the whole thing.
ANDI (CONT.)
Why do you always do that?
Claudia looks at her, confused.
ANDI (CONT.)
The straw thing. What is that?
CLAUDIA
Oh. That. I don't know, it's something
I used to do with my sister.
ANDI
Yeah, but what is it? You've done that
with every straw wrapper you've come
across since I've known you. I've
always wondered why you did that.
CLAUDIA
We were together for a year, how come
you're only asking me this now?
ANDI
I don't know, I guess I never felt
compelled to until now.
Claudia, still slumped in the booth, stares straight at Andi  for a second, contemplating. She inhales, then sits up and  grabs both ends of the wrapper again.
CLAUDIA
So, basically, you just tie the
wrapper into a knot, but not a tight
one. Then you pull on the two ends
until the wrapper snaps in half. If
the knot comes undone, it means that
someone, somewhere, is thinking about
you. Then you get to make a wish. If
the knot stays, then no one was
thinking about you.
Beat. Andi stares at the broken wrapper in Claudia's hands  before scoffing.
CLAUDIA (CONT.)
Oh god, don't be a dick about this. I
get it, you don't have any stupid,
meaningless games that you play.
ANDI
I didn't laugh because I thought it
was stupid. I laughed cause I think
it's cute.
CLAUDIA
Ah.
ANDI
And I do have stupid, meaningless
games that I play. Well, maybe not
games. More like rituals.
CLAUDIA
Rituals?
ANDI
Like things that I do that bring me
comfort. Or that I do for no reason,
just cause I've always done them.
CLAUDIA
Like...?
ANDI
(Leans forward onto the table)
Like... I find myself drawing stars to
different rhythms. Y'know the pattern
that's all crossed? I don't know. Or
sometimes, when I'm thinking, I do the
"cup song" from with my Pitch Perfect
hands, fingers, whatever.
She does the "cup song" pattern using just her hands, no cup.  She doesn't sing, either. It's simply the hand movements.
CLAUDIA
You're weird.
ANDI
Says you.
Both women laugh softly. Beat.
ANDI (CONT.)
So why do you do the straw thing? I do
my rituals when I'm stressed. So,
like, all the time.
CLAUDIA
I don't know why I do it. I guess I
just always have.
Beat. Andi wants to say something, but doesn't know yet if  she has the courage to. She decides to throw it out there.
ANDI
Do you think it's a way to be closer
to your sister?
CLAUDIA
I don't wanna talk about Leah.
ANDI
I understand. But you have to at some
point. I mean, that whole thing... it
changed you, didn't it?
CLAUDIA
Andi--
ANDI
I get it, I'm sorry. Didn't mean to
cross a line.
CLAUDIA
(Wiping away a single tear)
I just don't really wanna be
therapized right now, okay?
ANDI
(Taking Claudia's hands)
Okay.
(Beat.)
Are you gonna eat your grilled cheese?
CLAUDIA
Oh, right.
She takes a bite, then puts it back down.
CLAUDIA (CONT.)
I don't know why I can't talk about
her. Just too hard, I dunno.
She finally cuts a piece of the pancakes and eats it.
ANDI
I get it. I really do. I just wish
that you could let go of those scars.
They make you... not... you, I guess.
I hate watching it.
CLAUDIA
(Suddenly angry)
So that's what happened here? My
sister dies, and that's the reason
that I cheated on you? It's Leah's
fault?
ANDI
I never said that.
CLAUDIA
Yeah, but you implied it.
ANDI
I just think you've been reckless
since it happened. You'd been making
bad decisions for months. It almost
wasn't a surprise... I mean, it didn't
hurt any less, but...
CLAUDIA
I thought you weren't here to forgive?
Why are you trying to excuse my
actions, then?
ANDI
I'm not... trying to excuse them. I'm
just trying to find an explanation.
Because it doesn't seem like you're
too keen on giving me one.
CLAUDIA
The explanation is that I'm a terrible
fucking person, Andi. There you go.
Mystery solved.
ANDI
I can't believe that you're a terrible
person. I won't. As much as I've tried.
CLAUDIA
Why are you here, Andi? Why did you
meet me?
ANDI
Like I said, I wanted an explanation.
CLAUDIA
Doesn't really seem like you needed
that from me. You already came in here
convinced that it's Leah's fault.
ANDI
I... maybe I wanted you to confirm it,
I don't know. I think... I think I
wanted-- to hear it from you, needed
why you did what you did. Not the
bullshit "I'm a horrible person" or
whatever reason. But that was
something out of your control. Like
Leah. Because the only two other
options were that you are a horrible
person, or that you didn't love me and
you never have. And I couldn't handle
either of those reasons.
CLAUDIA
That's fucked, Andi.
ANDI
How is that fucked?
CLAUDIA
You don't get to do that. You can't
just get on a high horse and act like
you're better than me because it was
who cheated, not you. And then tell
me that bullshit? Fuck you.
ANDI
What do you want from me, Claudia?
Seriously.
CLAUDIA
Stop bringing Leah into this. Stop  throwing her death in my face as an  explanation for my shitty behavior.  You're exploiting her death for your  own benefit and it's disgusting.
ANDI
That's not what I'm doing.
CLAUDIA
Yes, it is.
ANDI
You are, Claudia! You're grieving and
everything else is collateral damage.
It doesn't hurt any less, but that's
the explanation. It might be a shitty
thing to say to you, but it's the
fucking truth. It's not Leah's fault,
that's not what I'm saying. But you
haven't given yourself time to grieve.
Stop pushing the people in your life
away. Otherwise you will end up alone
with your grief and trust me, Claudia,
that is the darkest, loneliest feeling
in the world and you will get out of it
not easily. Trust me.
CLAUDIA
God, you're unbelievable.
ANDI
What is that supposed to mean?
CLAUDIA
You've always had this... superiority
Your life is so fucking complex.
together. You have a nice apartment
and you have a steady job and you eat
healthily and you meditate and you do
fucking yoga or whatever. But you are
just as fucked as the rest of us.
ANDI
I have claimed to be better than never
anyone.
CLAUDIA
You didn't have to. It's in the way
you fucking walk. The whole atmosphere
changes when you walk into a room. I
used to think it was attractive, the
way you could own a room. But after a
while, I started to associate that
atmospheric shift, or whatever, with
feelings of inadequacy. I went from
thinking you were the coolest,
smartest person in the room to being
afraid of you. So maybe that's it.
Maybe that's why I cheated on you. Is
that a good enough reason for you?
ANDI
Why are you trying to hurt me?
Claudia leans over the table.
CLAUDIA
(Practically spitting the words)
Because maybe I'm a horrible. fucking.
person.
They stare at each other, daring each other to speak, daring  each other to move. Andi surrenders by getting up and walking  to the bathroom. Her face is stoic, almost angry, but she  wipes her cheeks as she walks. Claudia sighs, leans back in  the booth, and puts her head in her hands.
Penny walks over with the burger and coffee and places them  at Andi's empty spot.
PENNY
Do I even bother putting these down?
You think she's coming back?
CLAUDIA
(Staring off into space)
I thought it would feel good to
finally win an argument with her.
Instead I feel like shit.
PENNY
Did you win? Or were you just louder
and meaner?
Claudia looks briefly up at her, scoffs, and goes back to  staring off into space. Penny walks away.
Claudia gets up and sighs, then walks toward the bathroom.  She reaches the door, stops for a moment in front of it.
INT. THE DINER BATHROOM. NIGHT.
Andi sits in the cramped bathroom on the toilet, head in her  hands and elbows resting on her legs, crying softly. A knock  is heard from the other side.
ANDI
(sniffles and wipes her nose)
Occupied.
CLAUDIA
(from behind the door)
It's me, Andi.
ANDI
(softly)
Oh.
CLAUDIA
(from behind the door)
Can I come in?
Andi sighs and stands up from the toilet, walks to the door  and unlocks it, then goes to the sink and looks at herself in  the mirror. Her face is puffy and red. She wipes her eyes.
ANDI
Sure.
Claudia enters the bathroom, hesitantly. She sees Andi  standing in the mirror. Andi does not move, just looks at  Claudia from the mirror. Claudia looks at Andi's reflection.  Claudia is visible in the mirror. The next few beats happen  from this vantage point.
CLAUDIA
I'm sorry.
ANDI
Are you?
CLAUDIA
Yes. Please believe that.
ANDI
I love you. You know that. But the
past few months... I understand that
you're going through a lot right now.
But I felt so alone in our relationship.
CLAUDIA
I know.
ANDI
And the way you reacted to what Liam
did...
CLAUDIA
That was fucked up. I'm... I can't
believe I said that to you. Please
know that I place zero blame on you.
ANDI
Okay.
CLAUDIA
You mean a lot to me.
ANDI
I need an equal. We weren't that. Not
after Leah. Maybe in the beginning.
But not anymore.
Andi sighs and looks down at the sink, and sits there for a  second.
ANDI (CONT'D)
You're not a terrible person, Claud.
CLAUDIA
How can you say that? After everything
I've put you through?
ANDI
Because I've seen the good. You've
shown me the good.
CLAUDIA
I've hurt a lot of people.
ANDI
You can't keep holding onto that
guilt. If some people don't want to
forgive you, that's their right. It
fucking sucks, but it's how it goes.
But you have to forgive yourself.
Remorse does nothing if you don't work
to change anything.
CLAUDIA
(on the verge of tears)
I killed Leah, Andi. How am I supposed
to forgive myself for that?
Andi turns around to face Claudia.
ANDI
It wasn't your fault.
CLAUDIA
Yes, it was.
ANDI
You need to stop blaming yourself.
Claudia just stares at her.
ANDI (CONT.)
It was an accident.
CLAUDIA
That doesn't change the outcome.
ANDI
It wasn't your fault.
CLAUDIA
You're the one who always talks about
intention versus impact. It being an
accident doesn't make it not my fault.
ANDI
In literally none of the different
ways in which that car ride could have
gone was this your fault. It happened.
It's devastating. And you can mourn,
you can feel guilty about all the
things you never got to say to her,
for every argument, every spat, but
you do not get to blame yourself for
the awful twist of fate that led to
what happened. I won't let you. Okay?
CLAUDIA
How can I look at it and not see that
it's my fault?
ANDI
It's easier said than done, I guess.
And I know that it's hard to see that
from your perspective. But literally
no one is blaming you but yourself.
And if Leah were here, she'd agree.
Claudia just looks at Andi. She starts to cry.
CLAUDIA
I'm a broken person.
ANDI
No. You are a human being. Broken
doesn't exist in human beings.
CLAUDIA
Maybe I'm an outlier.
ANDI
For god's sake, Claud. You went
through one of the most traumatic
things someone can go through. And
because of that, you have done some
really fucked up things. That doesn't
make them okay, but you know that you
weren't born this way. I understand
that guilt. I get it, I really do. I
can't imagine what it feels like, but
I understand why you're going through
it. But you have to understand that
you will get through this. You just
have to do it without Leah. Which is
the worst thing in the world, I know.
But you are not a broken person.
CLAUDIA
Thank you.
ANDI
You're welcome.
CLAUDIA
What about us?
ANDI
What about us?
CLAUDIA
I've hurt you so much. Where do we go
from here?
ANDI
I still need time. I think you do,
too. Maybe we can try again, someday.
I love you, Claud, I really, really
do, but now isn't our time. I don't
know if it ever will be our time. But
that doesn't mean that I don't care
about you. I care about you too much
for my own good, to be honest.
CLAUDIA
I understand. I'm so sorry. For
everything.
ANDI
I'll get through it. So will you.
Fade out.
